Jonathan went to Central Park when he left the office the next day but Mukti wasn’t by her favourite tree. He called her cell and she answered on the second ring. “Oh, hey Jonny,” she said casually, as though it wasn’t only yesterday that they got back together. There was no background noise. She’s home.

“You didn’t come to the Park today?”

“Err, no. I’m in my studio, painting.”

“Painting what?”

“A view of the Lake,” she mumbled, “from a photograph. It’s one from the day we went on the boat.”

His heart did that stupid hoping thing again. “In that case, I won’t disturb you. I can see it when it’s done, right?”

“Sure.” Mukti sounded surprised by his lack of enthusiasm.

Any other day, he would’ve raced over to the house, watched over her shoulder. But it’s too soon for that. He needed more time before he could be alone with her.

“I’m actually painting it for you. To thank you for believing in me. Getting me to believe in myself again. In fact, I’m going to paint as much as possible now. You were right, and that’s so annoying.” She laughed a broken laugh.

Touched, despite knowing Mukti’s hidden motives—she wanted to show him he was making a difference to her life—he said, “Thanks. I’ll come see it when it’s done.”

“You won’t come over until it’s done?” This time her voice was a little broken.

“Don’t wanna spoil the surprise.”

“I wasn’t planning to make it a surprise...”

“You should. You know how much I love surprises.”

“You do?”

“I’ll come over on Saturday,” he assured her, “if you’re done.”

“If not?”

“We can still do something, but not at the house.”

“Something like what?”

“Whatever you want. I still haven’t taken you shopping.” That reminded them both of the last time the word shopping was exchanged between them, and whatever Mukti was planning to say was replaced by silence. “Or just lunch.”

“No,” she said in a light tone. “I want to stay at home until I finish this painting.”

“I know it’ll be amazing.”

Sensing that Jonathan was about to end the call, Mukti said, “Fingers crossed. I’ll miss you.”

Clearly, she was trying to prove she wanted to see him and needed him around. So, his heart shouldn’t have jumpstarted like that, his mouth shouldn’t be arid. Desire to see her face and kiss her lips shouldn’t have taken over like that.

“Me, too.” He hit ‘End Call’ before he said anything else. He had to be careful. More careful than she was going to be, it seemed.

She was making it impossible for him to reprogram himself back to the way he used to be with her. Why did she decide to be so open and honest about her feelings now? She’s realised how much I mean to her. Mukti didn’t want to lose him and was doing everything she could to prove that, and in turn, making things even more miserably complicated than ever before.
